You Decide

“The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own reward.” -   Amelia Earhart

What is the biggest decision you have in front of you right now, today? You know which one I mean. The one, that if you just made that decision, it would set you free to move forward and lead to new ideas and possibilities.

This decision could give you the freedom to know that you are being your best self because you are not letting doubt and uncertainty rule your life.

Now you might be saying, sure Cheri, but these are such uncertain times we are living in!

They are uncertain indeed – however, I believe (and hope you do too) that those who will come out of 2020 safely and with the least battle scars, are the ones who found their own solutions without waiting for some miracle to do it for them.

In my role as a Coach, one of the worst decisions I can see a client make is to make no decision at all. That’s where procrastination can take the drivers seat.

Here are some ways to look at the way you make decisions…

Do your due diligence and factor all the good and bad outcomes.

Evaluate using a pros and cons evaluation – write it down.

Cons really dig down deep to explore what the cons would mean to you.

Ignite your curiosity about what the pros on the list will bring to your life.

Simmer on it for a short period of time (the longer you wait the harder it is to decide).

Ignore the fear that might be tugging at you in order to make the decision not based in fear.

Open your mind to the positive possibilities this decision will bring.

Negotiate with yourself and others to find the best answer.

Last week, Ed and I were faced with a decision regarding the painting of our house. It was in bad need of paint job and we didn’t have the energy, time or where with all at this point in our lives to do it ourselves. However, that is not where the decision process came into place.

We had decided on the company and paint colors pretty easily doing what we thought was our due diligence. Where we messed up is that we didn’t get a sample paint color to put on the house before we made the final paint selection.

The day the color went on one side of the house (towards the end of the day) we stared at it in disbelief because it was so much lighter a color than we had wanted. Luckily, Leo our painter had headed home for the day, leaving us until he arrived at 6:30 the following morning to make a decision. The decision was going to be purely based on the time and money it would cost us to make a change (as with so many decisions).

The following morning, we stood there looking at the side of house in the morning light needing to make this quick decision before Leo arrived. We knew that this decision was something we needed to live with for the unforeseen future.

I did some calculations on the cost, $700+ just for the paint, and then there would be Leo’s extra time on top of that. We also looked at the fact that we potentially would have primer patches and the disruption all around the house for a questionable amount of time because of scheduling issues that would occur.

So, we stood there and stared at our house, our home, the place we have come to love as our sanctuary for the last 28 years. In that moment we made the decision. The paint color wasn’t awful or even unpleasant, it was just different than we expected. And it wasn’t done yet as the trim color wasn’t on and we felt that would make a difference.

With that we moved forward and you know what… now a few days later our home is looking beautiful. All the work is done, put back together and we got to spend the long weekend enjoying our home. Is it the exact color we had envisioned? No. And sometimes moving forward with less than perfect is so much better than staying stuck and feeling frozen in space and time.

In a world that keeps changing, sometimes daily, decisions that help you to move forward can and do make all the difference.

Here’s to an awesome week of decision making ahead! Can't wait to hear what new ideas you come up with!
