Unplugged Independence

Where ever you go – go with all your heart.
— Confucius

When was the last time you unplugged from the many electronic choices you have around you? I mean completely just let go of feeling the need to check in and do something, anything, and of course - everything!

The problem in our high tech world today is that it allows so many people to have access to each other online instantly and in the palm of our hands. With all this instant gratification we can sometimes forget that the offline parts of our lives can in fact be so much more rewarding.

Even when we remember these other offline moments of our lives, we can feel compelled to share that online as well. Enjoyable moments feel like they need to be shared with everyone else online.

It seems as though it’s the way of the world nowadays. With this transition into a 24/7 online world, there has to come a time and a desperate need to completely disconnect… if even for just a short while.

Yesterday, those of us here in America celebrated Independence Day. A day that stirs up a reminder of what independence means to each and every one of us. Since we’re on the topic of unplugging, when was the last time you felt truly independent from the pull of being online?

2 days ago I came back from my week long trip to Jamaica with my husband to celebrate our 30th anniversary together. By taking the time to let go of the need to check my email every 5 minutes (only briefly checked in twice in a week), we were able to create some really amazing, relaxing and unforgettable moments together.

It's amazing the full joy of enjoying another persons company without an electronic device between the two of you. You would be amazed though how many people we saw, right there in the middle of paradise who were constantly on their phones.  We felt liberated and incredibly independent in not having the interference in our fun.

In the week ahead, whether it’s a walk around the block - without your phone - or maybe even a full blown trip to a tropical island, start thinking of ways you can unplug from that incessant need to “check things.” I challenge you to unplug (if even for just a few hours) and feel the difference.

Here’s being fully present – wherever we go!
