Fortune Favors the Bold
There is a passage I read this week that has been hanging with me. Especially with the results of Super Bowl last night, I find them to be exceptionally true. The words originally came from W.H. Murray from The Scottish Himalayan Expedition and it goes as follows:
Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.
All sorts of things occur to help one that would not otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance which no man would have dreamed would come his way.
I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets: “Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, magic, and power in it. Begin it now.”
In every competition, there are two sides to every battle: a winner and a loser. The glory of winning makes you want to jump with joy, and the agony of defeat can make you want to sing the blues. But I commend the players of both sides for simply having the courage and the boldness to step into the spotlight and perform at their best.
There is an extra stretch to my smile this morning as I recall the joy of winning last night, as the Broncos brought the Vince Lombardi Trophy home. There is a saying around the fact that there is actually strength in needing others. And this morning I once again believe it to be true.
As family and friends gathered again at my sister and brother-in-law’s house to watch the game, in the back of our minds was the huge defeat of two years prior in that very same room.
As we boldly embarked towards a much different outcome this year we wore our lucky jersey’s, jewelry, and even did a little smudging throughout the room. We also brought a positive attitude and belief that in fact this championship was possible for this special team we have cherished for so many years.
Through many bouts cheering, yelling, laughter and joy – they did it and we all were victorious!! And I say we because the Bronco’s did not go out on that field in California alone there were so many with them every step of the way. And to add to the victory I won the Super Bowl money pool that was collected among all of us! Truly awesome!
Heading into this Monday morning – as I watch the orange of the morning sunrise I do feel that extra dose of boldness that comes with victory – how about you? Here’s to a most awesome week ahead. And… Go Bronco’s!
