Finding Your Flow

The race has not only started but you are well on your way,

It is now the muscles you’ve built will come into play.

Your endurance is a key factor keeping you strong,

How you prepared for this race will help you run long.

This is the moment you give all you can,

You run your best race now… that is your plan.

- Cheri Ruskus

What are your best physical muscles and mental mindset tools you are using to get you where you want to go in the race to live your best life? As I talked about in last week’s letter, over the course of these five weeks (this is week two) we are going to be talking about how to run your best race.

Flow is the best description I have heard of to describe that state of mind when we are fully in the race at 100% of our capacity. Whether we are creating something new or continuing on the path we have been on for some time. That feeling that you are can’t be stopped as you lose track of time and space. In other words, you are into what you are doing.

Endurance as we learned with Simone Biles stepping back from her role in the Olympics this past week comes in many different forms. She reminded us that sometimes you run the race for yourself and sometimes you do what is best for your team. Because so often we are not running alone. Someone else feels the effects of our good days and bad days.

The most important element to remember is that it is not just the physical endurance but the mental endurance as well. And in Simone’s case, she didn’t feel she had what was needed and didn’t let her ego potentially cause damage to the team or herself for that matter. I thought it was so courageous when the eyes of the world were watching that she took the necessary step back.

This morning while doing my morning momentum practice, I randomly heard a quote by Yvon Chouinard, a highly acclaimed climber back in the day and founder of Patagonia. His quote was, “How you climb a mountain is more important than how you reach the top.”

Always amazed when messages speak to me in that way because years ago, I had the opportunity to rock climb with Yvon at a popular climbing spot in southern California. He was friends with my boss at the backpacking company I worked for at the time. I had never climbed before and there I was with two of my colleagues getting taught by who we knew to be one of the great climbers of that time.

I didn’t do so well and crashed into a rock on my repel down. Totally embarrassed and physically bruised I will never forget his kindness and assurance that I really did do great for my first time out.

And I think that is my message I want to share with you this morning is that we may get banged up along the way, the race may not look exactly as we thought it might, it may take longer, and have more twists and turns than we ever expected. Only you can fully determine if this is the journey you were meant to be on.

Tomorrow I head out on my adventure to the Tetons to have a friends wish come true (lucky me!). Because I will be traveling there will be no Tenacity Tuesday this week. We will be back on August 10th with a very special guest that I am so excited to share with you!

Listen to the recording from one of the our previous recordings in the meantime.

Until next week, work on the plan for your race and evaluate where you need more endurance and whether you might need to adjust the course somewhat or stay true to the path you are on.

P.S. Today’s picture above happened this past week in my garden when I looked up to see this most beautiful Swallowtail Butterfly dancing on my Zinnia’s. Hope you enjoy.
