Feelin Groovy
When the music feels groovy everything flows. – Carole King
Hello December! I know your inbox is flowing over this today with all kinds of “deals” and I promise I am not here to sell you anything. I am just here to inspire you as the new month and week begins.
Where were you in the 1960’s both mentally and physically?
And in asking this question I know for some of you reading this, you were just a sparkle in your Mama’s eyes back then. However, those of you, like me, who were around back in those days, what do you remember?
We were in between the bebop of the 50’s and the new “progressive” sounds of the 60’s that included the Beatles. And as the 60’s moved on, the hippie generation came fully to life. Now I was a bit young to fully participate in the hippie movement but those that did were my idols.
So why, you may ask, am I talking about this? Last week somewhere along my journey I thought of the word “groovy”, and it brought such a smile to my face. A smile because it was such a freeing word that just oozed positivity and I hadn’t thought about it in a very long time.
The word groovy’s origins come from the music world. To express the groove with the rhythm of music, primarily jazz to start. And soon during the 60’s groovy was heavily incorporated into the pop culture scene to represent being stylish, cool, hip or trendy.
When I hear groovy, I think of bright colors, the cool music I still love today, black light posters that I had up all over my bedrooms (I moved a lot as a teen), tie-dye, cutoff jeans, my best girlfriends, long haired boys I had crushes on, and people simply being happy.
Perhaps that is where I gained my love of plants. Because the hippie movement also shared the ideals of getting back to the earth. Those ideals had been lost through the plastic and suburban ideals of the 1950’s.
Though, I didn’t quite fully embrace growing things myself until the late 1970’s when I got my first apartment, and I joyfully grew my first huge spider plant.
As we are now officially in the holiday season, I thought I would do a video this week about plants and how to manage them this time of year. How to have poinsettias without having massive poinsettias and a few other tricks and tips I have learned about indoor gardening along my way.
Enjoy this little video and I hope that you find the peace of mind that plants can bring to you this time of year. And that above all else you can get your groove on and get to feelin groovy as you make your way through the madness the holidays can potentially bring. In other words, be cool and get in the groove of things that make you happy!
Here’s to a groovy you this week! Remember good vibes only as you stay groovy.
Onward we grow,
