Exit Ramp

The best things in life are often waiting for you at the exit ramp of your comfort zone. - Karen Salmansohn

Is the car still running?

A few weeks ago, these are the words my husband spoke to me as I was heading home from dropping him off at the airport at 5 o'clock in the morning.

Now I thought I was being a pretty good wife getting up so early on a Saturday morning to help him head out for a ski week on the west coast with his east coast buddies.

On the hour drive back home, I was sipping on my coffee, listening to some beautiful music, thinking about the things I would do in the week ahead that I had to myself. That's when the phone rang and I heard Ed’s voice asking me those words I won't soon forget, "Is the car still running?!"

Of course, I thought, and said so out loud, why wouldn’t it be?

You see as Ed cleaned out his pockets at security at the airport, he realized the car fob (electronic key) was still in his pocket after driving to the airport. It wasn’t until that very moment that I noticed the message on the dashboard with the words “The fob has left the vehicle.”

Both of us felt the adrenaline rush as we were now a good 45 minutes plus from each other given I was on halfway home, and he was through security and at his gate. In that moment we were way, way out of our comfort zone and suddenly very wide awake.

All I could do in the moment was punt. Knowing there was nothing I could do but keep going and that the car in fact had not stopped, and probably would not stop running unless I turned the car off. Not an ideal situation but each exit ramp I passed got me closer and closer to home.

I made it home as the sun was rising and easily found the backup fob which was right where it was supposed to be.

The reason I share this story today is that life really is a series of moments that can take us out of our comfort zone. Sometimes mild distractions, sometimes little things that seem larger than life in the moment (like the fob incident), and sometimes true larger than life events.

This is when we must count on and trust our abilities in order to get to the exit ramp that will take us where we need to go.

In the week ahead notice where you tend to shut down and where you fully engage when life doesn’t work as planned. Especially as we continue to pray for peace and the end of the war for all those people in the world who are fighting to save the people of Ukraine.

Much love to all of us as we find a way forward towards the best part of our lives. 💚
