Cultivating Weeds

Happiness must be cultivated. It is like character. It is not a thing to be safely let alone for a moment, or it will run to weeds. – Elizabeth Stuart Phelps

Pansies and their smaller look alike, violas, are some of my favorite garden flowers. Which is why it was so hard when I knew I had to get serious about removing bunches of them from my lettuce bed.

My pansies and lettuce share the same bed in my garden. And they were in great abundance this summer. While I was enjoying them, I lost sight of an invasive wood sorrel weed (a small ground cover plant) that began to take over the bed intertwining their roots with the pansies.

Between the busyness of life and travel in August I simply was not paying full attention.

Thinking about it, while I was cleaning out the bed for hours and hours, I couldn’t help but think of the metaphor for how weeds can enter into the fibers of our lives. They can do so in the form of bad habits and doing things in our life that don't fully serve us.

The definition of the word weed is… a plant considered undesirable in a particular situation. A plant in a wrong place.

The interesting or perhaps unfortunate part of the wood sorrel is that I bought the plant about 15 years ago at the local nursery and brought it into my garden. Not knowing it would soon be taking over in many areas of the garden. Yes, a purchase I came to regret.

As you head into your week and we wrap up the month of August, look around to see if there are any weeds in your life that may need to be cultivated. Especially if that cultivation will insure greater long-term happiness and growth in your life.

Today’s picture above is the lettuce bed revived with new lettuce seeds, sprouting, flowering kale, and new pansies and violas. All are ready for the fall season ahead. Below are the pansies I was able to save and dry.

Tomorrow is the official public book launch day for my daughter Bailey’s book. Happily, she is here visiting for this great occasion. She will be sharing insights from the book on my Instagram Tenacity Tuesday live broadcast at 12 noon.
