Creative Clearing

The creative process is a process of surrender not control.  - Julia Cameron

Now that Fall has arrived…now what? What is next for you?

In a variety of coaching conversations this past week the need for creativity was a topic for discussion. Clients finding the need to create more and yet feeling anxiety around what they “should” be doing was getting in the way of allowing the process to happen.

As I have shared many times in this letter, creativity is not just something some people can do, creativity is a skill set that belongs to each and every one of us… if we let it work through us.  The process can start by getting the clutter out of the way so we can work on our creativity muscle also known as our Imagination.

The really cool part around accessing your own creative process is that it can relieve fear along with the anxiety that comes as you tap into your own inner genius. And yes, your genius lies within both your conscious and unconscious mind which are waiting to be tapped into as long you are breathing.

By tapping into that genius, you allow yourself to find better clarity and focus in your life. This includes both work and play. Here are 6 steps to allow your creative self to rock in the season ahead:

1.    Clear the clutter both physically and mentally (listen to this week’s podcast to help).

2.    Release the need for perfection, just begin to create without judgement.

3.    Entertain the ideas that you have longed for to actually come to life.

4.    Arrange your life around your creative desire not the other way around.

5.    Try to create things you have never done before - find teachers to help you.

6.    Enjoy and honor the creative being that lives inside of you.

Julia Cameron wrote an amazing book many moons ago called The Artists Way – A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity. This was a book that guided me towards my own creativity in ways I had not journeyed before. Writing this letter and thinking about the book this morning reminded me to take it off the shelf. As I revisited her words, I am excited to get my own fall creative juices flowing.

In addition, this Thursday, I head into another 31-day writing intensive to write every single morning for 31 days. Writing is indeed an amazing tool to untap our creative genius, even if you don’t consider yourself a “writer.”

Are you in for opening up to what is not serving your creative self so you can see what will help you to flourish creatively?

Remember when we can serve ourselves in a more caring way, we serve the world around us so much better. Think of it as your creative laboratory!
