Be Fierce

“Fight for the things you care about.” – Ruth Bader Ginsberg

This month in the Victory Circle we focus on the Mastermind Principle of Concentration. No doubt this year has been one where our concentration and focus has been a real challenge to hold onto. However, where there is a will … there is always a way.

In last week’s podcast I shared a story about a recent conflict in a volunteer position I held for the past year in a local organization. Several people in the organization decided to handle their differences of opinion speaking very unkind words of gossip behind my back and it resulted in a very unpleasant confrontation.

My choice afterwards was to either put up with these people on an ongoing basis (some words can never be unsaid) or start my own organization with all the resources I have been creating in my leadership role. Which do you think I did?

I will tell you that I pondered what my best options would be.  It came down to a number of discussions with others in the organization that gave me some objective perspective.

Then on Friday with the super sad passing of Ruth Bader Ginsberg, our beloved RBG, her many brilliant words along with reading even more about her journey actually guided me towards my truth.

One of the things I heard over and over was how fiercely she lived her life.  She was a champion for women’s rights as they correlate to the rights for all. What a caring force for good she was. She now moves from living icon to a legend. Her wisdom and fierce bravery will be missed but her words will never be forgotten.

Here are the top ten that really resonated with me:

1.    “You can disagree without being disagreeable.”

2.    “Reacting in anger or annoyance will not advance one’s ability to persuade.”

3.    “I am a very strong believer in listening and learning from others.”

4.    “When a thoughtless or unkind word is spoken, best tune out.”

5.    “Feminism – I think the simplest explanation, and the one that captures the idea, is that Marlo Thomas song, Freedom to be you and me.”

6.    “I think we understand that for the court to work well, we have to not only respect but genuinely like each other.”

7.    “All I can say is that I am sensitive to discrimination on any basis because I have experienced that upset.”

8.    “I think unconscious bias is one of the hardest things to get at.”

9.    “If you are going to change things you have to be with ones who hold the lever.”

10. “I really concentrate on what’s on my plate in the moment and do the very best I can.”

And perhaps it is #9 as well as today's lead quote that gave me the greatest push to say, yes it is time to start my own organization. So, I am moving forward in the months ahead and will keep you posted as it emerges.

In the meantime, here is to being fierce and concentrating on what matters most as you live fully in your own truth.
