Chasing Grasshoppers
Be the sunlight to your own path.
Is there something in your life that you feel like you feel like you are trying to chase down for one reason or another? Something that is blocking the light on your path? A nemesis of sorts that is causing havoc with your life in one way or another?
These past weeks of summer as the title for this week’s Victory Letter shares, I have been chasing my #1 nemesis in the garden…grasshoppers.
These little creatures have come in the hundreds (no exaggeration) and have been chomping the heck out of my garden. They leave nothing but destruction in their path. Now I am a loving person and in fact, my garden is organic because I care so much about all the little creatures that live in it. Therefore, it makes my attempts to rid myself of this plague of grasshoppers the last couple of years even harder.
I have come to know more about grasshoppers now than ever before. One or two are fine and serve a purpose. In the numbers we have been experiencing they are nothing but destructive.
As I share this with you today I do so to help us to remember as we look at our many life interrupters, the things that cause us strife, the truth is some interrupters are good, and some are bad and must be removed or we can’t focus on the important things.
Here is what my grasshopper chasing adventures have taught me thus far…
1. Be Persistent – If I did not keep up with them multiple times each day, they would have destroyed my garden and I am not exaggerating.
2. Get support – Finding natural solutions and discovering who will eat the grasshoppers such as getting a cocoon of praying mantis nymphs, bull frogs in the garden, and I even saw a yellow jacket munching on a grasshopper!
3. Find solutions – First being the source of where your problem coming from. In our case we have two fields of wild grass on either side of our garden. Previously it was only separated by a split rail fence and the little buggers were most definitely coming from the fields. So, we got a metal barrier put on the fence and not only does it look nice, but it helped so much in keeping more of the invaders out.
Now I would love to tell you they are all gone – but they are not. I must continue to remind them that I am here. I love my garden and it is worth the fight.
What do you love that you are finding a nemesis trying to destroy? Try these three steps and see where it takes you. Would love to hear of your trek to do so.
In the meantime, remember with the right tools and the proper mindset we can do more than we think we can. Who ever thought I could get so good at catching grasshoppers?
Enjoy the chase in the week ahead!
