Boo Who?

“Every failure is a test to see how much you believe.” – Travis Ruskus

Last week I had a significant anniversary because 38 years ago on October 26th I drove into the city of Boulder, Colorado. A move that would forever change my life. As incredibly scary as it was to move here (barely knowing just one person) it was one of the best decisions of my life.

Recently in making some updates to my website I was presented with a picture of a curve as the main picture for my site. In an instant I knew it was perfect because that is in fact what we are doing in the course of our business, and life maneuvering curves each and every day.

An anniversary after all is really about celebrating that you made it through all those curves and twists along the way!

Think how important it is when you are driving along and find yourself heading towards a curve in the road. Your focus in that moment must be on the curve. Knowing that in order to get the traction you need you must play to the curve.

All too often in our business adventures we are not paying attention to the curve or, worse yet, we have not done the work that will allow us to easily take the curves that will inevitably come.

It’s in those unplanned moments that we get scared and sometimes freak out making the experience much tougher than it needs to be.

In those moments we can make the fatal mistake of feeling sorry for ourselves and going for what I have come to call the Boo Who moment. Crying to ourselves (and sometimes anyone who will listen) about WHO it is to blame for the scary curves in our road ahead.

It can seem so unfair, especially when there is really no one to blame but the course of the road itself. I know I have had my fair share of these moments along my 35 years as an entrepreneur which happened not so long after landing in Colorado.

Thinking back about it now I know how much time and energy I wasted crying out all the boo who’s and attending my own little pity parties! Now a bit older, and I like to think so much wiser, I now know that in the moments of thinking the curve may overwhelm you, it is best to stop, pull up our big girl (or boy) pants, dry our tears, and get fully in the game by preparing to strategically take on the CURVE.

C Cue up to what is about to change.

Many curves come with a warning sign if we are paying full attention. This can come in a variety of forms from a map to a hard sign in the road letting us know what is up ahead. This is when focus and preparation is our best friend.

U Uncover what is really scaring you about this curve. What is good about the bumps along the way that have prepared you for this curve? What is on the other side of this curve that will serve you well. Create the vision in your mind’s eye of you easily conquering the curve with belief.

R Rely on your strengths and best traction skills.

You have been on this journey for a while. Yes, that’s right this isn’t your first curve, you have conquered many before. Think about what strengths you already possess that served you before and will serve you again knowing you have got this.

V Veer to the inside of the curve. Aerodynamically it is always best to lean into a curve versus fighting it. You save time and effort by heading towards the inside with confidence and just the right speed. Be one with the curve.

E Energize with the synergy that comes from outside support. Any good athlete knows that you can’t do it alone. Neither can you go it alone in business. You need the synergy of awesome customers, great vendors, a coach who helps you towards your vision, and people around you who are all about you making the curves.

Join me on today’s podcast as I share more on this topic and dive into this month’s Mastermind principle of Profiting from Failure. Those moments when in fact we miss the curve and crash. Napoleon Hill called them turning points and we each have them. We can profit from them financially of course if we play our cards right. Spiritually, the process gives us depth to be our best selves.

Now let’s get out there and maneuver those curves this week and no more tears!
