Courageous Conversations

“Empathy doesn’t mean you are going to fix it.”

– Rebecca Rose

Have you ever avoided having a conversation and then lived to regret it because either;

a) You missed the chance to deepen a relationship,

b) More conflict was created that effective communication could have resolved,

c) You missed out on an opportunity for growth on many levels because of fear of someone disagreeing with you or hearing the dreaded word no.

Last week I got so much positive response back about the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. One of those habits is all around creating win/win relationships in both our business and personal lives. High on the list of must do’s in creating a win/win relationship is the ability to have ongoing courageous conversations.

On this week’s podcast I have the opportunity to share with you a wonderful conversation on this topic of Courageous Conversations with Rebecca Rose, Founder and President of Catalyst Professional Veterinary Coaches.

Having had the privilege to work with Rebecca as her Business Coach for several years I got an inside glimpse into the industry she is so passionately making a difference in. An industry that has to deal with high burnout and compassion fatigue. Working environments where courageous conversations are critical and at times literally the difference between life and death.

Rebecca has created practical solutions for the Vet Clinics she works with across the country. Solutions for stepping into their own power able to express themselves by first learning how to listen. These techniques can no doubt be applied universally.

Throughout our conversation she takes a step by step look into the game changers when it comes to strong and courageous conversation.

Step 1: Avoidance doesn’t Work

Step 2: Empathy vs Sympathy

Step 3: Address the Top 6 Tips to Managing Team Conflict including picking your battles, anticipating conflict, using neutral language, preventative maintenance, and leveraging yourself.

Step 4: Create the framework for a calmer conversation

Step 5: If you apologize, do It right.

Just imagine a world where we can have these courageous conversations not for a win/lose (I win you lose) outcome,

or a lose/win (I lose, you win) outcome, but for the best solution of all - everyone wins in one way or another.

Join me over on the podcast for this important conversation.

As you head into your week, pay attention to the conversations you might be avoiding. Or, the conversations others might be avoiding having with you, especially if you have the power that will make a difference. Envision the what you can do to put a win/win strategy into place.
