The Choice is Yours
Each and every day we have so many choices. From whether or not to brush our teeth to the much more demanding choices that can deeply effect our life and the lives of so many others. Each moment is a choice.
The bottom line to a happy and successful life is based within those choices we make in the moment. However, we can find ourselves swirling through the days making very few of our own choices and living in the “busy” zone just continuing to take on what just keeps coming at us.
As I have experienced this myself, living this way can unfortunately leave us feeling exhausted and unfulfilled.
That is where stepping out of our lives and looking at it from afar - such as taking a vacation - can make all the difference. After my trip to San Diego last week, I feel like I can now approach this week ahead with a calm and focused mind.
On the trip I saw for the first time in my life the amazing rainbow around the sun that is in todays pic of the week. I learned this phenomenon is called a “sun dog.” Whatever you call this, it was a moment I would not have had the experience to enjoy if I had not stepped out of the day-to-day work of staying “busy” and just sat there on that beach.
What if we stepped out of the “day-to-day” everyday? Looking at what Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in his essay of the Circle way back in 1841 is a great point for exploration today.
He starts off with a powerful statement:
"The eye is the first circle; the horizon which it forms is the second; and throughout nature this primary figure is repeated without end.”
Deeper into the essay he goes on to say the following:
“The key to every man is his thought. Sturdy and defying though he look, he has a helm which he obeys, which is the idea after which all his facts are classified.
He can only be reformed by showing him a new idea which commands his own. The life of man is a self-evolving circle, which, from a ring imperceptibly small, rushes on all sides outwards to new and larger circles, and that without end.
The extent to which this generation of circles, wheel without wheel, will go, depends on the force or truth of the individual soul.
For it is the inert effort of each thought, having formed itself into a circular wave of circumstance, — as, for instance, an empire, rules of an art, a local usage, a religious rite, — to heap itself on that ridge, and to solidify and hem in the life.
But if the soul is quick and strong, it bursts over that boundary on all sides, and expands another orbit on the great deep, which also runs up into a high wave, with attempt again to stop and to bind. But the heart refuses to be imprisoned; in its first and narrowest pulses, it already tends outward with a vast force, and to immense and innumerable expansions.”
Your time is limited here on this planet. Make your circle big and full by not getting so caught up in the “to do’s” that you miss the “ta da’s” of a beautiful and spontaneous experience. Remember the choice really is yours.
