Taking a Pause

“It shall not be in our power to hold ourselves back.”
-Rabbi Fred Greene

Anyone who has been to Boulder, Colorado knows that it is more than just a beautiful place on the planet, it’s a state of mind. It’s a place that touches your soul and you are never the same again.

One week ago, today, our community here in Boulder was rocked to its core. We had the very unfortunate happening of becoming national news and another gun violence statistic in a long line of them. 10 beautiful souls lost their lives here needlessly.

While I did not know any of them personally, I quickly began to hear from others who did. That one degree of separation happens when something this horrible occurs in your own backyard.

Most everyone who has ever lived here has fond memories of that King Soopers on Table Mesa. Myself included. When I first moved here, I lived just blocks away. The whole shopping center was a place where I got my food and other living necessities. There was a true sense of community there.

On Thursday, Ed and I attended a vigil to honor the victims and hold each other’s hearts. Being there in community with our beautiful mountains in the backdrop we came together in love and our collective sorrow.

A message shared by one of the speakers, Rabbi Fred Greene, reminded us that we cannot hide. We cannot disappear or be indifferent, we have to share our grief in order to begin to fully heal.

He encouraged us to let our emotions out. To yell, cry, whatever we needed to do. Then once we took care of this primal need to make sure we did not become indifferent to this tragedy. Not by hiding but fully sharing our feelings with others.

This idea he shared was to first hit the pause button before continuing on. To fully let the reality of this moment, sink in. I talk more about ways we can look at the pause button in today’s podcast. How we each need to do, what each of us needs to do and some steps to take you there.

In knowing that we must continue on and make our lives matter I am even more devoted than ever to help people have their message heard.
