Stay the Course

There you stood on the edge of your feather expecting to fly. – Neil Young

Last Monday morning after writing the Victory Letter, I set out for an epic hike with some dear long-time friends who were visiting Boulder for a couple of days.

It was a beautiful Colorado blue sky day and we set out on one of my all-time favorite trails to hike. In fact, it was hiking that trail nearly 40 years ago that inspired me to move to Boulder.

As we hit the trailhead, I was so excited to be with them and to share this beautiful place. The wildflowers greeted us, and we were on our way.

Not that long into the hike, I realized that the trail itself looked different. There had been work done in upgrading this well loved and worn trail. Included what appeared to be a significant re-route of the original trail.

I began to wonder if I had somehow gotten way off course. But how could I, I wondered, I have been on this trail so many times!

We stopped to catch our breath and cool down a bit from the hot summer day. For a moment I pondered turning back, something I never do. But then up ahead I saw a trail head marker I recognized and felt my confidence return. We carried on making our way to the summit, and I marveled once again at the beauty that waited for us there (today’s picture).

I share this story with you because as the week wore on, I continued to hear stories from clients and others talking about feeling as if they had somehow fallen off their path in one way or another. Nothing looked familiar anymore or they were exhausted from the climb.

Heck, in working with my own coach about my concerns in keeping all that I have on my plate in my business in motion she said something very wise to me that touched me deeply. She reminded me that I am on a new path with the coaching program I am creating within the Grow Circles. Ironically enough a program that is based in utilizing our courage.

We talked about how at times it can feel like we lost our focus, however, it’s important to remember when we are on a path we have never been on before, we need to discover the focus we need to begin with. This of course can be much more challenging (and gratifying) then taking the same old path over and over. Change is good.

Sure, it is much easier when you have mile markers to confirm you are track, much more challenging when you are in the process of creating the mile markers.

Where are you in the journey you are on?

In my Victory Letters book that I wrote in 2003, I referred to it as thinking of it as running a race. In fact, the subtitle is, Inspiration for the Human Race.

I broke the book down into 6 chapters…

1. The Starting Block – Where the Dream Begins

2. Endurance – Staying on Your Path

3. The Hurdles – Accepting Challenges Along the Way

4. The Competition – Finding Your Lead

5. The Sprint – Holding Your Momentum

Finally,

6. The Finish Line – Reaching Your Goal

As you head into your week, ask yourself again where are you on your path thinking about the 6 categories above? Honor where you are, and fully understand and plan the steps forward that will take you where you want to be.

Have a most awesome week ahead and hope to see you on Wednesday!
