Selling with Heart - Pt. 1
I remember the first time I ever had to sell something as an adult. I was petrified. It’s funny I had done it many times as a child (girl scout cookies, etc.) and didn’t know then what I didn’t know.
At 23, I had been working for a small company as a Customer Service Rep for a couple of years when we were told we needed to start making outbound sales calls. I kind of freaked out.
However, doing as I was told, fortunately for me I had spent those years with this company building strong relationships with the retail buyers I now had to call (as opposed to them calling me). I found myself at that ripe age of 23 closing among many other sales, a $350,000 order that created a great win/win for one of my favorite customers and the company.
Anyone who has owned a business has been on the giving and receiving side of sales in one form or another. Some of those experiences have been awesome and some well…we fumbled and perhaps would just like to forget the attempt at the transaction even happened.
Sadly, sales is that one area of business that the most people try to avoid. And sadly, it costs their business dearly. Sometimes the cost is as great as the losing of their business all-together because they just don’t want to “have to sell.” It also can end up costing the prospective customers the opportunity to do business with them.
This month’s Victory Book Club choice is The Heart of Authentic Selling – Tap into the Power of Human Connection and Close More Sales by Sales Coach Liz Wendling.
Over the course of this week and next (part 1 and part 2) I am sharing with you my interview with the author, Liz Wendling. In a fun, honest and robust conversation around how to look at sales from your heart, yes, you heard me right from your heart, Liz shares the many elements it takes to not get all wrapped up in your head.
As we continue to look at ways to engage our heart into our work, let’s not forget this foundational piece of the puzzle.
And speaking of heart… how is the Love Letter challenge coming along for you as we step into week two? I have written to my little girl self (check me out @victorygirl), my gardener self, my sweet pooch Luna, my Valentine (giving it to him this Friday) and a few other special people in my life.
Let’s get out there and lead with our hearts!
