Measured Practice
What would you say has been your greatest masterpiece to date?
As we craft our year ahead and take the needed look how we want it unfold, it is important to plan out the race before you and insure your masterpiece takes on a new flow in the year ahead.
There will be shifts in the planned road for sure – and that is when the good stuff begins.
Stephen Cope in his great masterpiece, the book, The Great Work of Your Life, called this flow “deliberate practice.” The ability to master something as you pull apart the workings of anything you want to see improve or have a greater impact.
One of Cope’s examples was Jean-Bapitiste-Camille Corot, an abstract French painter in the 19th century who later in his career became heralded as one of the greatest landscape painters of all time.
Corot’s greatest challenges became the channel for his exploration into expressing light through his landscape paintings. In moving from France to Italy he discovered to his dismay at first, that the outdoor light was brighter.
This disabled him from painting in the same manner. He began to methodically pull apart the aspects of color one at a time and in doing so unleashed a whole new flow to his paintings.
Let’s fast forward to your world today:
- What it is that you would like to have become your masterpiece this year?
- Are you measuring what it takes to get there?
- What measurements are you taking to insure you are on the right path?
The idea is to analyze every element of what it exactly takes to achieve your masterpiece, then you find the details for the path you need to take.
Recently I created a project planner for the members of the Victory Circles that we will be working on this month. The idea is to have a tool that will take us closer to our definite chief aim and goals for the year.
Although I can’t coach you personally in this Victory Letter, as a valued subscriber I will give you the worksheet we use and a podcast episode that will help to guide you through it.
When you look at the idea of project management it really is about pulling the end results apart and determining the most important steps that will take you there.
Without those steps we can get lost in the daily overwhelm of so much “to do.”
I like to think of it as a RACE that we can win as long as we see our ideas to the finish line. Here’s to enjoying the ride as we gain mastery through measured practice each day!
