Making Bouquets
Give light and people will find the way. – Ella Baker
Yesterday as I puttered around the garden, I found myself making flower bouquets of all shapes and sizes in anticipation of our first frost that is now for sure due to arrive here in just a couple of days.
As the day wore on, I found myself trying to shake my melancholy and the lump that was in the back of my throat feeling like I would cry at any moment.
You see, this week also marks the end of my son, Travis’s time here in Colorado as he hits the road for unmarked galaxies. I don’t know about you, but endings get to me at least for a few days until the light of the new beginning that lies beyond fully takes hold.
I know my Colorado gardening friends this week will feel the same sadness of the garden season ending here and then we will begin to enjoy resting up for next spring’s adventures.
And I will watch with excitement and joy as Travis finds the adventures he has been dreaming of this past year as he did his buildout on his Lunar Explorer.
Forced change is never easy however, when we can create some gratitude around what we had prior to the change, we can begin to release the pain of the perceived loss. In my case with gardening as I made bouquets yesterday, I thought about how I have been given almost more 6 weeks of the ultimate fall gardening weather over last year.
And with each bouquet I created, I started feeling better, the lump in my throat went away and I also looked at the benefits of not having my garden consume as much of my time as it does. Giving me time to create other meaningful things in my life.
As the afternoon wore on and the bouquets multiplied, the gratitude really started to sink in as I lovingly remembered all the joy my garden has brought me this year. I knew it was time for its winter slumber. In the days ahead I will be the process of “putting it to bed.”
My mom always said when we had to say goodbye to each other after a visit, not to be sad it was over but indeed be happy that it happened. And my garden along with the gift of having had Travis home with us over these past many months will sit in a warm place in my heart forever.
What is the change ahead of you that you might be dreading or reluctantly looking towards? How can you change the narrative? To look at it with ideas of making bouquets with gratitude of what was as you create new possibilities in your life.
Wishing you happy moments in the week ahead as we all move through one change or another.
