Creating Boundaries
If it isn’t a clear yes, then it’s a clear no. – Greg McKeown, Essentialism
As we step into the full landscape of this new year with a new president and woman vice president (Go Kamala!) is it time to perhaps pick up the pace and get moving towards those goals you can make happen in the midst of a pandemic?
As I thought about what I wanted to share with you today the book Essentialism seemed to leap off my bookshelf and scream, “pick me, pick me!” As I breezed through the pages of this beloved book it became clear that yes this was exactly the material that could assist us at this moment in time.
Looking forward to the next 11 months ahead we still have quite an uphill climb before us. And like with any uphill climb, if we have the right mindset, stamina and fuel in our backpack we can make it with ease and grace to the summit of our choice. Books make for great fuel.
I got so excited about this book that yesterday I recorded a book review in more detail for this week’s podcast.
Here is a sneak peak of the 4 key elements of essentialism that Greg outlines in this book. These, as he describes are the means of living by design, not by default. And I don’t know about you but coming out of almost a year now of living by default in so many ways, changing the tune sounds good.
1. Essence – This is the mindset piece and the power of choice that each and every one of us has every day. Looking at how unimportant some things become when you look at it in a different light. The ability to take on the problems that you choose versus being constantly overwhelmed by someone else’s problems.
2. Explore – How to discern the trivial many from the vital few. The ability to actually escape and be unavailable for others so that you can be available for yourself. This is when you can see what matters most to YOU using your inner child to help you along your way from sleep, to work, to play.
3. Eliminate – Taking the hard look at what you need to cut out of your life that is not serving you. The ability to set boundaries as you say that powerful word No, cut your losses and move towards what you want in your life.
4. Execute – In this final step you create the buffer of removing obstacles that have you getting to the juicy things you actually do want in your life. How the small wins and the power of gaining a routine can fully give you the essentialist lifestyle.
Grab a copy of the book Essentialism - you will be glad you did.
As you move into this final week open your eyes, ears and heart wider in order to allow these four elements to assist in propelling you forward.
Until next week…
