Circle of Compassion

“When we’re looking for compassion, we need someone who is deeply rooted, is able to bend and most of all, embraces us for our strengths and struggles.” - Brene Brown

The time has come again for our annual Thanksgiving week celebrations here in the US. A time of celebration and gratitude. What about a time of compassion as well?

You know compassion, right? That human emotion that helps us to get past just our own wants and needs and allows us look towards those wants and needs all the people around us as well.

Compassion to get us past the uncomfortable moments when we feel like we can’t be ourselves or, are being judged by others for who we are or what we believe.

Let’s move from the modern-day quote by Brene Brown that speaks of bending towards embracing each other around compassion and get our arms around the physics of it that was shared by Albert Einstein in a letter that has come to be known as the Circle of Compassion.

“A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness.

This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”

In this week’s podcast I take a deeper look into compassion and ways to spend time with those you love in the holidays ahead with compassion being top of mind. Let’s face it being with the people you technically “have” to be with can cause unexpected (or over expected) stress at times. How about using compassion as a metaphor to be your guide?

C – Caring for another human being no matter who they are.

O – Opening your heart to others without expecting anything in return.

M – Mend old wounds that are causing you strife.

P – Play in new ways that bring laughter and joy.

A – Answer inquisitive questions even the tough ones.

S – Sing out loud.

S – Say what is in your heart.

I – Ignore the negative reactions.

O – Organize ways to try new things together.

N – Negotiate peaceful ways for everyone to eat and speak together.

Here’s to compassion all around you in the week ahead!

See you on the podcast...
