Being Committed
The relationship between commitment and doubt is by no means an antagonistic one. Commitment is healthiest when it is not without doubt but in spite of doubt. – Rollo May
This morning as I write to you, I am blessed to say that today marks my 35th wedding anniversary with my husband, Ed.
The word commitment keeps coming to mind as the number one skill set to keep any relationship going for the long haul. Because let’s face it life is not always rainbows and lollipops.
There are real world problems and differences of opinions. Heck in many ways Ed and I couldn’t be more opposite in how we look at life. For one example, he is lifelong corporate guy, and I am a lifelong entrepreneur.
However, at the end of the day we find a way to blend what matters most for each others happiness and remain dear friends after all these years. We can fight with the best of them, and we can laugh together until we cry.
We have felt deep sorrows together over the years in saying goodbye to our parents as well as other dear family and friends along the way. Through it all we have continued on as a couple because of the consistent commitment to each other and our family.
Having both come from failed first marriages, I believe we made the extra efforts to not fail again, especially after bringing our two children into the mix. They became the glue that held us together and at time like in their teenage years were the friction that jostled us around a bit (or a lot).
Here are some important elements that I have found makes a strong long term relationship:
1. Riding the waves together. Like the wedding vows say – in good times and in bad.
2. Loving yourself in order to fully love another person (as shared in last weeks VL).
3. Finding and sharing forgiveness – even when it’s really, really, really, hard. Being honest with each other about your feelings can help in this process.
4. Seeking outside help when you can’t seem to resolve a growing issue.
5. Not listening to outside opinions that does not have the greater good of your relationship in mind.
6. Never forgetting the love, you initially shared. It will tend to fade from time to time but by keeping it strong in your mind you will hold on to it as you move through darker times.
7. Remembering that life is short and precious. The time you have together in any form of a relationship is not predictable. Honor the time you have been given in order to live without regret.
As you head into the week ahead look at the relationships that matter most to you and ask yourself what you could do to enhance them?
Would love for you to join me tomorrow at noon mountain time for a new live series I am starting on Instagram called Tenacity Tuesdays.
We are going to talk and share stories of courage. This week will be me flying solo sharing some antidotes around finding the Tenacity in my life to take me where I am today.
To join in, just follow me on Instagram at our new page of @businessvictories and then at 12 noon you will see the live icon appear at the top of your Instagram feed. I am excited for this to unfold and the ability to share important stories of courage and hope.
If you or someone you know has a story to tell, please let me know and I would be happy to schedule you on an upcoming Tenacity Tuesday.
Well, off I go to spend the day with my honey, and I wish you the best week ahead as we wrap up the month of June and the first half of the year in fact. Here’s to the best that the second half of this year has to offer.
