Wants versus Needs
Darkness only makes the light more apparent.
Well, my friend, it happened. Daylight savings time came to an official end yesterday and here in most of the United States (except Hawaii and most of Arizona) we had to fall the time back by an hour.
It’s that day when winter feels closer than ever, and we start to move more inwards. There is more darkness at the end of each day as we move closer towards the shortest daylight hours of the year next month with the Winter Solstice.
This past week I had the opportunity to hang out at my daughter’s home in Pacific Beach, California as she headed out on her long-awaited honeymoon, leaving me in charge of my grand puppy, Coconut.
One of the beautiful parts of my work is that I can do it from anywhere and mix work with play. My son, Travis who is now living the van life, surprised me, and stopped in for a visit. His creativity and technical mindset were something that I was realized I was needing as he appeared. He arrived from 3 weeks of traveling through the southwest on his way up the California coastline.
On Friday, while he and I were driving to get some new technical toys (I got a new apple pencil for my IPad), we got into the topic of wants versus needs. There are a lot of fancy homes and cars here in California. New shiny Tesla’s, BMW’s, and Porches were constant on the road we were traveling on.
While the Tesla is Trav’s dream car – a need one day as he sees it - to me, I see it as a want. An overpriced want in my opinion and something I don’t believe I would ever spend the money on. Though I do believe I need an electric car one of these fine days to help the planet.
These thoughts and conversation gave me great fuel (no pun intended) for the course studies I am working on to attain my Money Coach certification. Money plays such a big role in our lives and can, if we are not careful, suck the joy right out of our days when we are feeling in lack or worry over our current circumstances.
As I shared with Travis, if I have one regret in this life it is the time and energy wasted in my earlier years wanting the fancier car, the bigger house, you know all those things, “that money can buy.”
When I stopped wanting more than I already had, I found the abundance came to me in ways I hadn’t quite expected. Most especially as an entrepreneur. Negative money mindset can become our greatest nemesis versus staying more emotionally unattached when our money path doesn’t quite work out as planned.
Using money as the tool it needs to be, can take us where we need and yes want to go. Where there is a will there is always a way. With the right mindset money can get us less emotionally charged and stop draining our energy by not allowing money to define our day to day happiness.
The result, amazingly, is that a healthy money mindset can help us to better utilize the power money can in fact give us in our lives.
I will be sharing more of the tools I am going to be incorporating into my coaching practice and mastermind circles as I finish my course work and gain my certification in January.
In the meantime, pay attention to your wants and needs. How they serve you and how they may be distracting you. In the meantime, I will be heading home tomorrow recharged and ready to take on what is ahead in the darkness…allowing me to find the light to the end of this year of 2021 and into 2022.
