Timing Patience

Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant.
— Robert Louis Stevenson

Well here we are today with one quarter of the year down and three to go.  How is the year shaping up for you so far?

Now being that I am a Business Coach you might expect me to ask what your ROI (return on investment) has been in the first quarter of the year? However, my question is what is your SPI?  What are the seeds planted investment you have made in the 1st quarter?

As a gardener I love this time of year because of all the possibilities for this season of spring that pulls us into summer and then right into the fall. On a beautiful spring day, I can be tempted to start planting all kinds of seeds but here is what I know to be true planting seeds requires timing – in both gardening and in business.

The timing of planting seeds is important. Let’s look if I were to plant seeds that were not cold weather crops such as certain lettuce varieties and instead planted something like let’s say basil, a warm weather crop.

More than likely than not in Colorado we would have one of our infamous April snow storms with temperatures varying sometimes by 40 degrees and easily hitting the dreaded 32 degree mark.  While the cold weather crops could survive…not so much with the warm weather crops making my planting a complete waste of time and money.

To see the success with planting seeds we need to plant them when the time is right and then to know when to mulch, water, fertilize and compost.

Same is true in your business where should you be planting seeds right now and how can you further nurture the seeds you have already planted?

If you have read this far, then you can be sure that the biggest asset in planting seeds beyond the right timing is patience.  Something we can run low on in our instant access society.  Understanding your sales cycles just like the weather patterns is critical.

Stop and think about what business seeds you planted during the first quarter that will bloom in the second quarter?  What seeds are you going to plant in the second quarter that will bloom in the third and maybe even fourth quarter of this year? Or, maybe even moving into the upcoming year?

Timing, mixed with patience, and understanding can be such a blessing in our businesses and our lives.

Enjoy this rich and abundant time of year and have an amazing 2nd quarter.
