Thanksgiving Triggers

If you think you are enlightened spend a week with your family. – Ram Dass

As my fingers hit the keyboard this morning this quote has me smiling as we head into Thanksgiving week here in in the U.S.

It is a time for gratitude to be sure especially after the last couple of years. However, family time can be stressful. Perhaps it’s because these are the people on the planet that have the greatest access to our hearts. Yet sometimes they don’t seem to know us very well or the depth of where we have been on our individual journeys.

I can remember growing up that there was this be seen and not heard attitude. In fact, for many years myself and my siblings sat at the kitchen table for Thanksgiving dinner because there was not room at my great aunt’s main Thanksgiving table in the dining room. Everything in her house needed to be perfect.

And the truth was I think we had more fun in the kitchen anyway because we were far from perfect, well at least I will speak for myself.

So, perhaps the key to enjoying the holidays ahead is to look past the triggers that define your differences and look towards truly taking the time to enjoy the things that you love about your family.

Here are a few elements about how to be more enlightened in a light-hearted way this Thanksgiving. Hopefully it will help you get to Black Friday without losing too many brain cells along the way. Let’s use the word thanks for our acronym:

Try and carry forgiveness in your back pocket … pull out as needed.

Have a sense of humor and let your smile be contagious.

Ask people how they are and really listen for the answer (hopefully they will reciprocate).

Namaste your way through the day (“The divine light in me bows to the divine light in you.”)

Kindness goes a long way, look past differences as a negative and more of a positive.

Simply remember that your differences are what makes each of you unique!

Speaking of being different … Tomorrow on Tenacity Tuesday Live my friend Mike Michalowicz, author of his latest book Get Different, will be my guest. We will be discussing the tenacity it takes to be different in today’s business marketplace.

And I bet you could even take some of Mike’s tips to the dinner table on Thursday to help your family better understand why your differences are who you are. Just be ready with the other thanks elements for back up as needed ;).

Coming next week more details on an opportunity to join us for a special workshop in December that will allow you take on 2022 your way!

In the meantime, let’s put the happy back into Thanksgiving! I hope you have some time during this long weekend ahead for some R & R and time to enjoy being you.
