Face the Fear

courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway

Have you ever felt completely alone in facing a challenge? Have you felt fear that gave you skin scary sensations throughout every part of your being? Perhaps it lasted for a minute - or perhaps for days, weeks, or even years.

Every time the thought you think of that fear it faces you head on.  All of us as have felt fear in one form or another, as it is just part of the human condition. Fear is our “fight or flight” condition. What makes the biggest difference in our individual lives is what we do with that fear once we feel it.

Or as the great actor known best for his cowboy attitude, John Wayne, shares in today’s quote how we must saddle up and take it on.

What are the things for you that currently get your heart racing with thoughts of dread and gloom?

Here are five action steps to guide you towards making the shift from living in fear to living with the courage to see straight past it.

Fear Action Step #1 - Don’t Go it Alone

We have been talking all this month about cooperation and the power of surrounding yourself with people who empower you. Somehow fear seems to dissipate when someone you know, like, and trust is standing beside you. Who can assist you with a fear that seems to be stopping you in your tracks?

Fear Action Step #2 – Face the Fear

This week’s picture (see below) was taken during a stroll in my garden where I almost walked into this spider and its web. Spiders do tend to freak me out, so I stopped just in the knick of time to fully look at it and the intricacy of what it was doing. By fully looking at it I was able to delight in the beauty of this tiny little creature - and my fear totally subsided.

Fear Action Step #3 – Take One Step at a Time

With some fears building up over time in our minds eye, taking it all on at once can be completely overwhelming. What if you took it one step at a time? Educating yourself (such as I did with the spider) can bring a big relief. Think about how turning on the light can make such a difference when you hear things that go bump in the night. Perhaps this could be taking a step towards the fear of growing your business and getting out of your comfort zone…  Find the small steps that help you find the solutions to your fears.

Fear Action Step #4 – Let It Go

Gratitude and forgiveness can be a great change agent for letting some fears go.

Especially when it comes to relationships, fearing that someone might emotionally continue to hurt us again and again can be quite difficult. Open your eyes wide and remember that forgiveness at it’s finest is about not saying what someone did is right, it’s more about how you two can move forward from it.

Fear Action Step #5 – Trust Equals Courage

Trust is part of our essential nature. When we can let go of the fear that surfaces and take full advantage of trust, this can bring us the courage we need to step up and handle our deepest fears.

I would encourage you to take a few minutes right now and instinctually write down what is scaring you the most right now in your life. If you can’t even write it down, it will always carry a grip on you. Release it.

Please keep in mind I am not talking about scary movies or all the ghoulish and goblin characters we will be seeing in the week ahead. It’s more about the important life and business issues that are keeping you from all that is possible for you based on the single element of fear. Shine your flashlight into the dark tunnel and face it! The other side will be filled with light.

Would love to hear your thoughts about your own unique fears in the comment section below.

Happy Trick or Treating!
