Evaluating Your Crumbs
If your life were a book and you were the author, how would you want your story to go?
-Amy Purdy
As tales of ghosts and goblins trek through our lives this week with the arrival of Halloween, it leads me to asking you that all important question…what scares you?
And I am asking this question beyond the creatures of the night, more about the creatures of the day. The perceptions in your mind of the fears that could potentially be holding you back.
Perhaps there is a fear that has been nagging at you for a while. A fear that wants you to do something about something important for your life. Something you have wanted to do for a long time, or perhaps even a short time with a powerful longing inside of you.
Tomorrow marks the 39th anniversary when I pulled into Boulder, Colorado ready to make it my home. I had visited Boulder that July with some friends and something just snapped inside of me. I knew I was ready to leave a not so happy life behind in L.A. and start a new life here in this beautiful magical place.
Was I full of fear? Hell yes! Petrified. And yet I knew if I didn’t come then, while in between jobs, in a marriage that was failing, and living in a city that just didn’t feel like home anymore, I never would. So, at 24 I packed up my little pickup truck and hit the road east. For the first time in my life doing something so completely solo, free falling into a new life.
All these years later as I reflect at the gifts of seeing past that fear, I feel such incredible gratitude. Met the man who was actually supposed to be my life partner, had two great kids together, become an entrepreneur within a few years of my arrival (another fear free fall), and continue to love and adore this place I call home.
Some fears are so worth going towards and some others not so much. That is what we must evaluate and decide what is the best fear to move towards. The thing with fears is those we have no desire to go towards, like sky diving for me, and we can move on from them without regret.
However, last week I did step back out and start speaking live in public again after an almost 2-year hiatus due to the pandemic. This is an action that makes sense in my life. And one, that I will plan on more in the future even though it remains a bit scary with all that is still going on with Covid.
Perhaps that is where we look at regret. Will you regret not looking towards your dreams and desires in a new light?
Frances Mayes, author of Under the Tuscan Sun, put it this way about her new novel she is currently writing, “After decades as a writer you look back and see where the crumbs you have dropped have led you.”
What crumbs will drop in the week ahead to help you on your way?
Will it be trick or treat?!
P.S. Join me on Tenacity Tuesday this week as I dive more into this topic. Perhaps even see past your biggest fears as you come on live with me and share a fear you are ready to tackle.
