A Matter of Taste
“You eat with your own mouth”
– Josephine Leanza
Each of us are the same in that we are human, yet different in so many ways. Different in our good qualities and then again different in what some might consider not so great qualities. Our uniqueness lies somewhere between the two.
The judgement that can come from looking at another’s life without really knowing their true-life story, or the road it took to get them where they are seems to be plaguing us these days. Resulting in keeping many from being the best that they can be. I think it’s important to talk about.
This month as we focus on the mastermind principle of our Unique Personality it leads me to ask this question...
How can you stay unique if you are trying to just conform to what you and others think you are “supposed” to be?
Last weekend I facilitated a table at a large women’s empowerment event. My task was to ask each woman at my table of 10 to articulate the story that she needed to share about a critical incident that had happened in her life. From there, the values that carried her through and what had happened within her head and her heart because of it.
Then finally what was the commitment she had already made in her life or wanted to make in her life because of the story so that she could empower her life and also touch the lives of others in a meaningful way.
Some pretty powerful stories were shared that moved me deeply and reminded me that there is a lot that goes on for each of us beneath the surface of our skin. I see this in my role as a Coach all the time. The sheer weight of self-doubt and fear of judgement from others can either empower us to make a difference in the lives of others or pull us down to not even fully live our own life.
While I was driving home from the event my mind wandered back a few months when I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days in San Diego with a coaching colleague turned dear friend, Dr. Gloria Miele. One night as we dined over some yummy sushi we talked about the different taste in food we each had, her loving spicy foods and me not so much.
Gloria shared with me the profound words of her Grandmother Josephine Leanza who said, “You eat with your own mouth.” Those words stuck deeply with me and I thought it was an important topic to share more on.
So today I have the honor to share with you a podcast that Dr. Gloria and I just recorded taking our roles as not only women who have lived on the road of life for quite a few years but as Coaches. Gloria also has the rich experience of having been a Clinical Psychologist. Together we explored this topic deeper which I am calling – A Matter of Taste. I hope that you enjoy.
Here’s to your own special taste.
