Happy Monday {First Name}!

With Christmas just one week from today, where do I begin to share all that transpired over these past several weeks? Let’s begin with a little context of where my heart lies.

I have been blessed since I was six years old, and attending the elementary school that I did, to have created several lifelong, deep and enduring friendships with my girlfriends Linda and Nancy.

The glue in our friendships was our mothers. Our loving, strong, playful and deeply spiritual mothers whose personalities were as diverse as our own.

Even as we grew up and moved to different parts of the U.S. our friendship has remained strong. Nancy lost her beloved mom Pat over 20 years ago and my mom went to the great beyond over 14 years ago. These past few weeks we had to say the eternal goodbye to Linda’s Mom.

As Linda, Nancy and I, along with of course Linda’s family, made our way through saying goodbye to Mama Jan, our deep rooted friendship guided us through navigating the initial stages of this tremendous loss.

Added to the surrealness of this goodbye was that Linda’s stepfather of the last 43 years, John, had died just days before her mother at the age of 93 (Mama Jan was 90). Theirs was an inspiring love story and the appropriateness of having their eternal goodbye together seemed so right.

I flew to Linda’s home in Pittsburgh where she lives and her parents had lived for the past few years. There was a funeral mass there for family and friends. We then we traveled by car 1200 miles to Kittery, Maine. This where Jan and John had spent the last 20 or so years of their lives on Gerrish Island.

They had designed and built a new home there along with John building his dream sailboat. Hearing the stories from their neighbors and friends while we were there were so confirming of both lives well-loved and well lived. It was all so heart-warming and bittersweet. And a great reminder of the importance of love and light in our lives.

As we head directly now towards Christmas and my last letter until after the holiday, I want to remind you of hugging those you love just a bit tighter. Reach out to that loved one you maybe haven’t talked to in a while. Don’t get so caught up in all the preparation of the season that you forget the most important element of the season, loving each other.

Be the light for others as you allow them to be the light for you.
